JOB TITLE: ART TEACHER - K-6

(Anticipated Opening)

JOB SUMMARY: The successful candidate will provide instruction in areas such as painting, sketching, designing, and sculpturing as well as different media to express artistic individuality. The art teacher will integrate science, social studies, mathematics, and English language arts in the study of art. Students will also explore a variety of techniques, assorted materials and master new skills.

MINIMAL QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Valid Michigan teaching credential covering grades K-12 (LX, LQ, or LZ) required; an additional credentialed core area desirable.
  • BA or BS including all courses to meet credential requirements.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with other professionals and works successfully in teams and departments.
  • Above average recommendations from student teaching supervisors and other professionals who have knowledge of the candidate's teaching ability.
  • Ability to communicate in effectively in writing.
  • Present a portfolio that exemplifies artistic ability.

MAJOR DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES (May include but not be limited to):

  • Prepares lesson plans and establishes course goals consistent with the district curriculum and the Michigan Curriculum Standards and Benchmarks in the area of visual arts.
  • Works closely with fellow teachers to coordinate the study of art with other core academic subjects being taught.
  • Demonstrates method and procedure to pupils and offers support and modeling for ongoing improvement.
  • Observes and evaluates pupils' work to determine student progress or to make suggestions for improvement.
  • Develops and communicates a rubric for student work.
  • Links the study of art to history, English language arts, science, and mathematics.
  • Establishes and maintains communication with parents using a variety of means.
  • Accompanies students on field trips to museums or art galleries if appropriate.
  • Works with students to encourage the development of creativity.
  • Establishes and monitors a student management system that allows for a learning environment that is conducive to effective teaching and learning.
  • Maintains required grading and attendance records.
  • May direct planning and supervision of student contests and arranging of art exhibits.
  • Works with students with diverse abilities and teach students with disabilities.
